Captain America Wears Green
Patrick Reed has made his name in golf through his demonstrative play in international team competitions. He has played on Ryder Cup teams, President Cup teams, and represented the United States at the 2016 Olympic Games. When you mention his names, images of Reed “shushing” the European crowd in Scottland, or burying a putt on top of Rory McIlroy at the 2016 Ryder Cup might come to mind. His play at these competitions have earned him the moniker “Captain America.”
Last night, Reed earned a new title: Masters Champion
Despite his success, Reed was not the crowd or viewing public’s choice to win the tournament. McIlroy, Reed’s playing partner on Sunday, received a loud ovation prior to hitting his tee shot on No. 1. When McIlroy began to fade on the back-9, social media was buzzing for a come-from-behind victory from either Jordan Spieth or Rickie Fowler. There was little to no support for Patrick Reed.
Some of this might simply be due to the fact that Reed was competitions against some of golf’s biggest and brightest stars in McIlroy, Spieth, and Fowler. Rickie is arguably the biggest influence to golf’s younger generation and everyone in the game is aching to see him get his first major championship. Reed also has a controversial and dark past which was chronicled and detailed very well in this article on Golf.com
Regardless of whether you were or were not cheering for him, Reed really couldn’t careless. He spoke at his press conference following his win that he doesn’t much care for what folks say about him on Twitter. He appears to have confined himself to the inner circle of his wife, children, and her family. What you can’t deny is the poise that Reed showed coming down the stretch with two of golf’s biggest stars beating down the door. Reed handled the enormous pressure of capturing your first green jacket and first major championship.
The next major championship is in 66 days at Shinnecock in New York - site of the United States Open. Brooks Koepka, who was unable to play in The Masters due to injury, will try to defend his title. At this moment, all four of golf’s major championships are in the hands of American players. A good omen to be sure in a Ryder Cup year - but European players such as Rory McIlroy, Justin Rose, and Henrik Stension have had early success in 2018 and fared well at Augusta National this week. It’s just one more storyline to keep an eye on in an already unprediable 2018 season.

Patrick Reed is no stranger to winning on the PGA Tour. Coming in to this year’s Masters, Reed had 5 PGA Tour wins including a WGC title. While Reed’s reputation has been crafted through international competitions, he has demonstrated a pedigree to win on the most talented tour on the planet. It should come as no surprise then that Reed was able to capture his first major championship in the shadows of where he won two collegiate national championships at Augusta State. On a cool and crisp Georgia afternoon, several of the game’s biggest guns made spirited runs at @PReedGolf, but one by one, he turned them away. #themasters https://t.co/87HcCSoRyO— Masters Tournament (@TheMasters) April 9, 2018
