Avengers: Infinity War

Bogeys and Blue definitely covers golf.  We cover our fair share of sports:  particularly the Michigan Wolverines.  What we don’t spend a lot of time covering is the “lifestyle” category of our “About Us” section.  We aren’t really sure why.  After all, if The Ringer can talk about whatever it wants, why can’t we?

Once in a while, a media production transcends society and absolutely has to be talked about.  A Seinfeld reunion would certainly qualify.  A broadcast of man’s landing on Mars would have to be discussed.  And while few would put “Avengers: Infinity War” at the same level of a Mars landing, the movie is remarkable on so many levels that to ignore it on this opening weekend just doesn’t seem right.

First, some background.  In 2008, Jon Favreau directed a movie starring Robert Downey Jr - Iron Man.  The character itself has never occupied a place on the “Mt. Rushmore” of comic book heroes (Empire has Iron Man ranked No. 17 on it’s list of top comic book characters).  The direction of Favreau and the brilliance of RDJ made Iron Man a surprise hit.  And perhaps more importantly, it set in motion the creation of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

A year after Iron Man was released, the Walt Disney Company acquired Marvel Studios which is now a wholly owned subdisary of the media conglomerate.  Disney saw an opportunity to build upon the success of Iron Man and create a new world of comic book movies.  The man put in charge of this bold mission was Kevin Feige.  Feige is the president of Marvel Studios and under his leadership, Feige was tasked with overseeing the creation of different comic franchises (Iron Man, Spider Man, Guardians of the Galaxy, Thor) and not only make these successful tent poles for the studio, but ultimately weave them together to create The Avengers franchise.

What Feige has done frankly does not receive nearly the recognition it deserves.  In the world of comics, the two biggest franchises are DC and Marvel.  It is widely accepted that the “better” characters reside in the DC world.  Heroes such as Batman, Wonder Woman and Superman along with villains like Joker are all DC properties.  Yet in the 10 years since the Marvel Studios launched, Feige has overseen a cinematic universe that is far superior to the competition at DC/Warner Bros.  Feige and Marvel have taken b-level heroes such as Iron Man, Thor, and Captain America and elevated them to star status amongst movie goers and comic book lovers.  They have also taken lesser known stories such as Guardians of the Galaxy and made them successful beyond anyone’s expectations.

And it all culminates with this weekend’s release of Avengers: Infinity War.  The third Avengers movie finds Iron Man, Thor, Hulk, Black Widow, Loki, Guardians of the Galaxy, Black Panther, Captain America, Ant Man (yes, really) and Spider Man all together onscreen to battle intergalactic villain Thanos as looks to conquer the universe by collecting the Infity Stones.  Throughout the various MCU films, the Infinity stones have been the common thread that have linked the various movies throughout the last 10 years.

PREDICTIONS

As of this writing, B&B has not seen Avengers: Infinity War.  We will be there tonight in what is expected to be an opening weekend windfall for Disney to the tune of $500 million.  There has been a lot of chatter about what is going to happen in this movie.  The set was locked down and very little has been released.  Even the Russo Brothers, who directe the film, have made a personal plea to fans not to spoil it for others.

That has to mean that some of your favorite characters are going to perish.  There are not only new stories to tell (i.e. Black Panther and Captain Marvel), but playing the same role for a decade is a daunting task.  Here are B&B’s predictions:

  • Captain America or Iron Man are going to die.  As much as we would prefer to see whiny Captain America go (#TeamStark), we are leaning towards a final goodbye to Tony Stark.
  • Loki also dies seeking redemption for his past.
  • The Guardians of the Galaxy will have a much bigger role to play in the movie than what most expect.

Enjoy the experience.  It’s sure to be a wild ride.  And remember....#ThanosDemandsYourSilence
