Master's Preview

In ten days, the golf world will return to East Georgia and that special tract of land cultivated by Bobby Jones and Alister McKenzie.  Augusta National will host the first major of the year.  The world will reacquaint itself with the timeless traditions  of Magnolia Lane, Butler Cabin, the Azaleas in full bloom, and Amen Corner.

The two biggest story lines heading into The Masters involve Nike's most visible athletes: Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy.  Woods has only started two events this year and has yet to make it to Sunday.  He had admitted that his game is not tournament ready.  Will the 14-time major champion return to Augusta National?  Reports on Tuesday indicated that Wooods' private plan had been spotted in Augusta.

Rory McIlroy is going for the career grand-slam (which is ironic since the first grand-slam winner was the founder of Augusta National).  Rory is coming off of an historic 2014 which saw him capture the Open Championship and PGA Championship.  A win at The Masters would be the fifth major championship for McIlroy and would further separate McIlroy as the No. 1 golfer in the world.

It's no secret that in the last several years, Augusta National has catered to the long-hitters.  While players such as Mike Weird and Zach Johnson have found success on the course, the majority of champions are able to draw their drives over 300 yards.  That is why players like Dustin Johnson, Jason Day, and Bubba Watson will be formidable.  But the real defense to AGNC is the greens which require keen and daft touch.  That is why I would look to either Rory McIlroy or Jordan Spieth to capture this year's green jacket.
