2016 Masters Recap

Heading into Sunday, the story line was how Jordan Spieth would handle another 54 hole lead at the Masters. Through nine holes on Sunday, Spieth had answered those questions by taking a five shot lead. After bogeys on 10 and 11, Spieth did the unthinkable on No.12 dropping two in Rae's Creek and finishing the hole with a seven. By the time the dust had settled on the carnage, Spieth was down three shots to Danny Willet.

The toll on Jordan Spieth is yet to be determined. The blow will be somewhat cushioned by the fact that in his first three Masters appearances, Spieth has finished second-first-second. But knowing that you had  one arm in your second green jacket heading into the 12th hole, only to see it lost, will undoubtedly have an impact on Spieth moving forward in the 2016 campaign.

Spieth has made Augusta National his own personal playground. His unflappable demeanor, his constant stay cool under pressure approach the game, has earned him a tremendous following from golf fans across the world. Nobody expected to see what they saw on the 12th hole Sunday evening in Georgia.  Yet there was the finest American golfer of the last three years standing in utter disbelief as he walked off of the 12th green.

Meanwhile, who would have thought that England's 20-year Master's drought would be ended by Danny Willet.  It wasn't Paul Casey, or Ian Poulter, or Lee Westwood, or Justin Rose: no it was little-known Danny Willet who wasn't even sure he would be playing in this year's tournament unless his wife gave birth to their child in advance.  Willet remained cool while Spieth panicked on the 12th.

2016 seems to have the feeling of the "Year of the Unknown" in the majors.  You also don't want to hold a Masters lead on Sunday in years ending in "6."
