WGC: Bridgestone Invitational

Firestone Country Club has been hosting major golf tournaments and PGA Tour stops for as long as I can remember.  The Akron, Ohio club has most recently been the site of the World Golf Championships: Bridgestone Invitational.  That long history ends this week with the final playing of the event in Northwest, Ohio.

Despite it’s impressive history, Firestone Country Club arguably owes it’s fame to Tiger Woods.  Woods is an 8-time champion at Firestone.  Who can forget the “Shot in the Dark” during the 2000 WGC event?  It’s one of Woods’ more iconic moments in his storied career.

The WGC: Bridgestone Invitational hosted arguably the best “tour” field of the year.  Given that it is a limited field event, there is no cut.  So whether you show up on Thursday or Sunday, you are going to see every player compete.  This year’s field features Dustin Johnson, Jordan Spieth, Jason Day, Justin Thomas, Phil Mickelson, Rory McIlroy, Patrick Reed, and of course the return of Tiger Woods to Akron, Ohio.

If you live in and around the Midwest, you should do everything you can to get out for a day this week.  You can’t walk more than a couple of holes without seeing a top-player in the world, current major champion, or your favorite golfer.  And since it’s not a major, the galleries are not overly voluminous (unless of course you follow Woods).

PREDICTION:

So who is going to leave Ohio as the final Bridgestone champion?  Yeah we are going to go with the nostalgic pick here:  its Tiger Woods.  Woods captures his first win in 2018, his 9th WGC: Bridgestone Invitational, and Firestone Country Club's farewell to the PGA Tour ends with Woods as their all-time champion.  Here he is teeing off in 2014.
