Wait, tennis?  A blog that almost exclusively talks about golf sprinkled in with some college football and pop culture is going to talk about tennis?

Yes, Yes we are.  As we were saying, Wimbledon kicked off from the All England Club this morning.   In many respects, Wimbledon is tennis’ equivalent to The Masters.  Just think about these comparisons:

  • The Masters and Wimbledon are the most prestigious titles a golfer and a tennis player can win respectively.  
  •  The traditions of Wimbledon are widely known such as wearing white, the meticulously crafted grass courts, and the simple slightlines and complete lack of any advertising on the courts.  This mirrors The Masters with Augusta National’s dreamlike landscape, the all white caddie overalls, and the complete lack of corporate advertising on the course. 
  • The champions of both Wimbleon and The Masters are given honorary memberships to the clubs. 

But the biggest news coming out of London this morning had nothing to do with the play on the court.  Itwas the new look for defending champion, and greatest men’s tennis player in history, Roger Federer.
Tennis fans are familiar with Roger Federer wearing the iconic Nike swoosh on his apparel and shoes.  The deal is reportedly worth $300 milllion.   While the look for Federer may be different, the results at Wimbledon remain the same as he disposed of his first round opponent, Dusan Lajovic in just 79 minutes.

“The Fortnight” is the greatest two weeks of tennis - even for the most casual fan.  Enjoy your strawberries and champagne as you watch the best tennis players in the world compete for the biggest title in the sport.
