Michigan -vs- Hawaii - A Speitcial Day!
Not only is this post about 48 hours late, but admittedly the title is a stretch for a clever play-on-words. While B&B enjoyed the holiday weekend, it is time to recap and rehash the trouncing from Saturday at the Big House.
Michigan opened up the season against Hawaii and were a 41 point favorite. The biggest question entering the game was who was going to be the starting quarterback for the Wolverines. The answer: Wilton Speight. After the Michigan defense forced an opening 3-and-out against Hawaii, Speight's first throw as the starting quarterback was......an interception. Fortunately, the opening pass was not a foreshadow to Speight's afternoon as he went 10-13 for 145 yards and 3 TDs.
After De'Veon Smith was taken out of the game following an initial injury scare, freshmen running back Chris Evans proved to be a more than competent backup racking up 112 yards on 8 carries and scoring 2 touchdowns.
The defense was suffocating all day only allowing a handful of first downs and a mere 3 points courtesy of a 55-yard Hawaii field goal. Michigan's Mr. "Do It All" Jabrill Peppers not only inflicted his will on defense, but also showed off his incredible athleticism.
Michigan ended the afternoon with a 63-3 victory over Hawaii. While Michigan more than covered the spread, excitement should be somewhat tempered given the lack of a quality opponent (no disrespect to our friends from Hawaii). Overall it was a great weekend for the Big Ten who went 12-2 in the opening weekend #RowTheBoat.
There was also plenty of excitement off the field as Michigan debuted their Jordan brand uniforms. Michigan's honorary captain for the opener was none other than Michael Jordan himself. MJ was also joined by other notable Jordan brand athletes with ties to Michigan including Derek Jeter, Charles Woodson, and Lamar Woodley.
Michigan's next opponent is the University of Central Florida on September 10, 2016. Michigan is hovering around a mid-30 point favorite against the Knights. Michigan, now ranked 5th in the AP poll, should expect to add another one-sided affair to it's resume.
