Big Days for Big Blue

This holiday week has provided some exciting days for fans of Michigan athletics.  The Wolverines have been overshadowed by their in-state rivals from East Lansing for the past month given the Spartans' appearance in the College Football Playoff and the basketball team's No. 1 ranking.  While the limelight has not been front and center on Ann Arbor, the Wolverines play on the football field and the basketball court have been promising.

The Michigan men's basketball team is 2-0 in Big Ten play after a road win against Illinois and a throttling of Penn State at Crisler Center on Saturday.  Mark Donal has greatly improved his play since starting Big Ten play and will be a crucial piece if the Wolverines expect to have much success moving forward.  Saturday was an absolute explosion of 3-pointers led by Zac Irvin and Duncan Robinson.

Michigan faces three tough tests coming up with contests against Purdue, Maryland, and Iowa.

As for the gridiron, Michigan obliterated (ESPN's words, not mine) Floria in the Buffalo Wild Wings Citrus Bowl on January 1, 2016.  It would be tedious to get into every facet of the contest as the Wolverines pitched a near perfect game.  The offense was led by Jake Rudock who quite possibly vaulted himself onto an NFL roster (a true testament to the coaching ability of Jim Harbaugh).

The 41-7 win, though coming in a bowl game, is a statement of where this team is heading.  Michigan crushed the SEC runner-up and did so in dominating fashion.  This is encouraging given the number of key players who are returning next year.

Sometimes living the shadows is not such a bad thing.  Though the spotlight has not been brightly on the Wolverines the last month, the results from this past week are more than encouraging.  Continued hard work, good health, and a bit of luck could lead to some big results in 2016 and beyond.
