Jason's Day at the PGA Championship

Jason Day was one of those golfers that came to mind when you thought of best players without a major championship.  He was right up there with the likes of Sergio Garcia and Rickie Fowler.  Day already had a memorable season with two PGA Tour wins and strong finishes at both the US Open and Open Championship.  But Day entered the final major of the season as a man on a mission.  He took a two shot lead into the final round and never looked back.

Day captured the 97th PGA Championship at Whistling Straits.  Day overpowered the golf course all week (hitting driver/wedge into the 569 yard Par 5 on Sunday).  Whistling Straits was supposed to be a fair but stern golf test, but the world's best professionals overpowered and had their way with the golf course.  None did so better than Jason Day.  To put his week into perspective:

  • Day set a PGA Championship scoring record at -20
  • Day's score was the lowest score aggregate to par in any major championship
Day commented after the round that holding off Jordan Spieth made the win that much more enjoyable.  If it hadn't been for Spieth, everyone would be talking about the amazing year that Jason Day had (3 PGA Tour wins including a major, Top-10 at US Open, Top-5 at Open Championship).  Spieth capped off his amazing 2015 major season with a solo second at the PGA Championship to go along with a win at the Masters and US Open at T-4 at the Open Championship.  The only other players to finish in the Top-4 of all four majors in a given year are Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods - impressive company.

And while Spieth didn't win his third major, his consolation prize wasn't too shabby.

Spieth is now the No. 1 player in the world.  Americans occupy five of the top ten spots.  Day moved up two spots to No. 3 with his win in Wisconsin.

Next week, the Tour's "regular season" concludes at the Wyndham Championship.  It is still unclear if Tiger Woods will play and a decision is expected within the next 24 hours.  B&B is going to take the week off and gear up for the Fed Ex Cup playoffs.
