Fed Ex St. Jude Classic Preview

First, congratulations to David Lingmerth on capturing his first PGA Tour win at the Memorial over the weekend.  My participation in a golf tournament yesterday meant I did not have time to write a re-cap of Jack's tournament.

This week, the pros fine tune their game for Chambers Bay at TPC Southwind for the Fed Ex St. Jude Classic.  The Jim Nantz-less event in Memphis, TN benefits the wonderful work and research of the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

Events the week before majors are always feast or famine.  Many of the top players choose not to play the week before a major and instead prepare on-site.  Others prefer to play competitive golf as a means of preparing.  This week, the St. Jude Classic features Billy Horschel, Dustin Johnson, Phil Mickelson, Luke Donald (recent qualifier to the US Open), Brooks Koepka, Graeme McDowell, and Webb Simpson.  Rory McIlroy, who has previously played in this event, has opted not to participate this year.

TPC Southwind has tried to replicate US Open conditions in previous years featuring tall rough and wicked fast greens.  It will be impossible to replicate the conditions of Chambers Bay this year as the US Open course is a links style course.

Notes

  • For the fantasy geeks, USA Today's fantasy picks are out.
  • For those who actually know me, I am partial to this event as the charity this week is the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.  My cousin Kate died of a brain tumor when she was 6 years old.  She was patient there and they took tremendous care of her as they do with every child they treat.  Each year a run is held in Michigan to raise proceeds for brain tumor research and the money is donated to St. Jude.  If you're interested, check out the link for AdvoKate.
