McIlroy Wins WGC Cadillac Match Play
Even though he missed out on the big fight last night, Rory McIlroy delivered the knockout punch on Sunday capturing the WGC Cadillac Match Play Championship. (Editorial Note: I apologize for the fight pun. I really fought it - but I am sitting here with writer's block trying to come up with something witty). McIlroy went 7-0 and, despite some analysts question of McIlroy's play, he was able to come up with clutch shot after clutch shot (especially on the 17th hole).
McIlroy beat an impressive roster of tour players en route to the title including Jason Dufner, Brandt Snedeker, Billy Horschel, Hideki Matsuyama, Paul Casey, Jim Furyk, and Gary Woodland. McIlroy's quarterfinal matchup against Paul Casey resumed at 6:45 AM PST on Sunday and only took one hole (due in part to Casey suffering from flu like symptoms).
Rory's semifinal matchup against Jim Furyk was McIlroy at his finest going birdie-birdie-eagle to advance to the championship match. What separates Rory from the rest of the world's best is his ability to turn-on a switch when he needs it most. It is a trait that is synonymous with Tiger Woods during the height of his dominant reign.
There is no rest for the weary as Rory as the rest of the PGA Tour head to the Tour's flagship event at TPC Sawgrass and The Players.
