Middle East Mickelson

This morning, golf fans in Phoenix were treated to some bad news as their adopted son, Phil Mickelson, announced that he would end a 27-year streak of playing the Waste Management Phoenix Open.

Was this because of an injury?  Does Mickelson have a conflicting family matter?

No.

As Geoff Shackelford so brilliantly opines, Mickelson chose a cash grab from Saudi Arabia under the guise of “growing the game.”  Frankly, it’s still disappointing that so many organizations continue to flock to Saudi Arabia following the tragic events of Jamal Khashoggi.  Some have taken a stand against it (like the WWE’s John Cena who chose not to compete in one of the promotion’s biggest events).  While others are seemingly perfectly at ease with cashing a check and not considering the mortal or political implications.

A few weeks ago, we praised Mickelson for stepping up to take over the old Bob Hope Classic and raved what a perfect match Mickelson was for the event.  And while Mickelson is an independent contractor who is free to make his schedule however he pleases, at the end of his career, this doesn’t seem like the best move to make.
