The Players
Are you ready for a championship steeped in tradition?
Are you ready to return to a course you know like the back of your hand?
Are you ready for limited commercial interruptions?
Are you ready for dramatic music reserved only for this unique championship?
OK you still have to wait a few more weeks for The Masters. BUT if you are ready for the PGA Tour version's of A Tradition Unlike Any Other, then this week is for you. The poor man's (though not in the purse cause the Tour backed up the BRINKS TRUCK this year) version of The Masters is this week. Honestly we don't hate The Players - it's a fun tournament on a famous golf course. It's just that the Tour tries so hard to make this event a "major" and not relish in being the best tournament that isn't a major.
The biggest change, and what you will probably hear the most during the broadcast this year, is the return of The Players to March. Under the new PGA Tour schedule, the "Championship Season" will now run from March to August and finish just in time for the NFL. Honestly it's not just a smart move for the Tour to stop trying to compete with the NFL for fans during the fall, but take a look at how lush and green TPC Sawgrass looks now compared to the dried out browns we have been exposed to since the date was changed to May about a dozen years ago.
The course has been overseeded and looks better than it has in years. This is the perfect spot for The Players and hopefully this return to March is a permanent change for the Tour's premiere event.
So who is going to win The Players and hoist that brand new gold trophy? Well he has had a hard time shutting the door this year, but Rory McIlroy has been around the Top-5 all year long and is overdue for a return to the winner's circle.
