Michigan & Nova - The Rematch
While a lot of atttention in the sports world is focused on the much hyped event between Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson dubbed “The Match,” last night saw a rematch between the finalists of the 2018 men’s national championship basketball game.
Rematches in college sports are frequently unfair comparisons because of the turnover of players. Both Michigan and Villanova lost key players from last year’s game to the pros or graduation. Nonetheless, Nova was expected to beat Michigan on their home court.
Instead, the 18th ranked Wolverines earned an early season quality road win and put the rest of the nation on notice that they are still a formidable opponent. Not only was Michigan able to score at ease, but their defense was suffocating. Michigan protected the ball and was able to force Villanova into turning the ball over. While John Beilein teams are predominantly known for their offensive skill, the last few years have shown a change in direction and emphasis on defense. Those dividends paid off in Philadelphia on Wednesday night.
Michigan’s next two games against George Washington and Chattanooga - two games they should win. Then they get their next big test against North Carolina on November 28 in a nationally televised game at Crisler. The matchup against the Tar Heels will tell us more about how god Michigan really is this year.
