Tiger’s Return Tour: Wells Fargo Championship

With The Masters Touranment now well in the rear view mirror, it is easy for golf fans to look ahead to the next “big” tournament.  The unofficial 5th major, The Players, tees off on May 10 and concludes on Mother’s Day.  The Players, which we will go to in-depth next week, boasts the strongest field in golf.  It is also contested annually at TPC Sawgrass and features one of the most iconic holes in all of golf:  The island green at 17.

But despite the buildup to The Players, golf fans should have their attention turned to Charlotte, North Carolina.  The Wells Fargo Championship boasts one of the best courses on tour along with a top field.  The list of previous winners include Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy and Rickie Fowler.  So let’s break it down.

The Course

After playing at Eagle Point last year, the Wells Fargo Championship returns to Quail Hollow.  QH hosted the PGAChamponship in 2017 and did not pull double-duty.  Quail Hollow is a world class venue that features “The Green Mile”: the 16th, 17th, and 18th holes that are amongst the toughest finishing holes on the Tour schedule.

The Field

Once again, the top names in golf return to Charlotte to compete in the Wells Fargo Champinship.  Defending PGA Champion (held at Quail Hollow) Justin Thomas, WGC-Mexico champion Phil Mickelson, Rickie Fowler, 4-time major champion Rory McIlroy are just a new of the names playing this week in the Queen City.

Oh.....and that guy

Tiger Woods returns to the Wells Fargo Championship as part of his return tour.  Woods will be paired with defending US Open champion Brooks Koepka and defending Masters champion Patrick Reed.  We haven’t seen Woods since his appearance at Augusta National this week.  Woods will also be sporting some new irons he collaborated on with Taylormade.  We’ll see if Woods was able to work out some of the swing issues that plagued him at The Masters.

So even though everyone is waiting for The Players, the Wells Fargo Championship serves up an appetizer almost as appealing as the main course.
