Michigan's Skid
Michigan was poised at the beginning of the week to make some noise in the national landscape of men's college basketball. They ended the week sitting in the middle of the Big Ten conference after suffering back to back home losses. Not just any old home loss, but blowout losses against Indiana and their in-state rival Michigan State.
It's not time to push the panic button quite yet, but Michigan needs to find something coming down the stretch if they want to a void a second straight season of missing out on the NCAA tournament. There was talk at the beginning of the week that Michigan star Caris LaVert would return to the lineup. He was nowhere to be seen against either Indiana or the Spartans.
Michigan fans need to lend a little perspective to their hot take Twitter reactions that were bountiful on Saturday evening. John Beilein is not on the hot seat nor should he be. The men's basketball program is in as good of shape now as it's been in the last 20 years. But there is little question that Michigan needs an answer and it needs to find it quickly. Michigan could be one of six Big Ten teams to make it to Leap and NCAA tournament. But they will need some big wins coming home in order to do so as well as a good showing in the Big Ten tournament later on in March.
Michigan is on the road against Minnesota on Wednesday. The Golden Gophers are at the bottom of the Big Ten standings and they held tough with Michigan at Crisler in late January. Michigan needs to beat the bottom-feeders and then find a way to knock off some of the top teams (Iowa) in order to build a tournament worthy resume.
