Michigan vs. Michigan State: AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

For 59 minutes and 50 seconds, I did not think I would have to write this post.  For 59 minutes and 50 seconds, I knew that Michigan had just beaten the #7 team in the country, would reclaim the Paul Bunyan trophy, and that all of the hype surrounding the Michigan program would be instantly validated.

Then this happened....

Michigan punter Blake O'Neill, who earlier in the came crushed an 80-yard punt, fumbled the snap, and then attempted to throw the ball resulting in Michigan State scooping up the loose football and scoring a game winning touchdown with no time left on the clock.

Yeah, that really happened.

I exited the stadium feeling like a family member had just passed away.  It was a feeling of surreal sadness.  You could heard a pin drop in Michigan Stadium (aside from the dozen or so Spartan fans who hadn't left).

To compound matters, Blake O'Neill began receiving death threats and hate-fueled texts from "Michigan fans."  Just to be clear, those individuals are not fans: they are psychopaths.  The unfortunate reality of being a successful and well-known program like Michigan is you unfortunately get drifters and rift raft who have no association with the university.

The fact that this loss hurts so much should probably be a sign that things are trending upward in Ann Arbor.  The problem is that us Wolverines don't buy into the ideas of "moral victories."  Maybe we should - especially after the last seven years.  Obviously moral victories don't put a win on your record, nor do they make you feel any better walking out of a stadium feeling stunned and in disbelief.

Michigan now sits at 5-2 and a bye week heading into this weekend.  There is no question that is a vastly improved football team from what we have seen over the last few years. Jim Harbaugh has this program moving in the right direction and there is no reason to believe that trend won't continue.  But a win against undefeated MSU would have setup Michigan for a potentially special season.
