2014 FedEx St. Jude Classic
This year's primer to the United States Open is once again the FedEx St. Jude Classic in Memphis, TN. The tournament obviously holds a special place in my heart, as it does for thousands of others who have had family treated at the world renown facility.
Over the years, TPC Southwind has been setup to give players a "preview" of what they will experience at the Open, namely, fast greens and thick rough. Though no course can truly replicate a US Open setup, the St. Jude Classic has made strides to provide the best in the world with a course setup that will hone their skills heading in the second major of the year and provide them with a competitive theater in which to perform.
While this year's field is void of any players inside the Official World Golf Ranking's top-10, it is not lacking for star power. This year's event is headlined by Phil Mickelson (11), whose off-course issues have certainly raised his profile heading into the US Open. The field also boasts Johnson and Johnson - Zach and Dustin (14 and 15 in the OWGR respectively), Graeme McDowell (22), Ian Poulter (24), Lee Westwood (29), Webb Simpson (33), Rickie Fowler (39) and defending champion Harris English (47).
While the best in the world tee it up in Memphis this week, most of which are priming their games for the next major championship, the real winners of the week are the remarkable children, doctors, and staff that makeup the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. The battles they fight daily should serve as a reminder to everyone of the value of life and the courage these kids possess.
