78th Masters Pairings

The pairings for the 78th Masters Tournament were announced yesterday.  While the Masters' pairings don't generate the type of buzz of say a US Open (which has a penchant for putting together diabolical pairings for the sake of humor), there are select pairings which should be keenly observed by viewers.

First, my "star" pairing consists of Rory McIlroy, Patrick Reed, and Jodan Spieth.  The average age of this group is around 22 years old.  However, this group combined has won two major championships, a WGC championship, and ten PGA Tour Wins.  This group embodies the future of the Tour and there is a very good chance that the winner of the Masters Tournament come Sunday evening could emerge from this group.

The second "star" pairing would have to be Henrik Stenson, Dustin Johnson, and Jason Day.  Again, this group boasts three guys who all have a very good chance of winning the green jacket come Sunday.  While Stenson hasn't had the start to 2014 the way many expected, he has the game to win at Augusta National Golf Club.  Jason Day, who I predicted would win the event shortly after his WGC Match Play victory, is coming off a hand injury which has left him sidelined for several weeks.  Will the layoff have an impact on his ability to contend?  He has come close to winning The Masters in the past.  Despite the injury, he remains my favorite to win the first major championship of the year.

Defending champion Adam Scott, in keeping with the strong amateur tradition of The Masters, will tee it up with Matthew Fitzpatrick who won the United States Amateur Championship last year.  They will join the reigning PGA Champion Jason Dufner.  Historically, repeating at The Masters has proven to be very difficult.  A win for Scott would not only net him a second green jacket, but would make him the No. 1 player in the Official World Golf Rankings.
